After the flood waters recede and the debris is cleaned up, most people will want to begin rebuilding as quickly as possible.  While it is understandable to try to get back into a home or business as quickly as possible to try to retain some normalcy, problems can occur when trying to rebuild too quickly.  Flood waters have likely submerged the wood causing it to absorb large amounts of water. Beginning the rebuild process too quickly can lead to mold growth, insect infestation, and rotten wood.

Flood waters are filthy.  They contain bacteria, viruses, waste particles, and all kinds of gross contaminants.  Materials that are more porous, like drywall and carpet, must be removed and replaced.

CAUTION!  Make sure you inspect for structural and electrical damage from outside to determine if it is safe to enter.  Electrical safety is extremely important in floods. Check for fire hazards and gas leaks. Use battery-powered lights.  Wear sturdy, rubber shoes, rubber gloves, and eye protection. If mold is present, wear a respirator with a HEPA filter.
